The European Committee of the Regions welcomes the vote by the European Parliament's Agriculture Committee in favour of new agricultural market surveillance and regulation tools

The towns and regions welcome the adoption of the report on the Common Organisation of the Markets by the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee of the European Parliament and call on the Member States to take these propositions on board. The report proposes new agricultural market surveillance and regulation tools that are vital to maintaining agriculture across the EU and keeping rural areas alive, as called for by the local and regional authorities.

"A large proportion of farmers are selling their products at a loss and have an income which fails to reflect the value of their work. In the absence of fair farm prices and with no economic recognition, young people will continue to shun farming. And the regulation on the common organisation of the market proposed by the European Commission is not enough to head off crises in the sector. An examination of the dairy crisis shows it to be symptomatic of the inadequacy of the tools currently available. In a volatile market, market regulation is more effective and less costly than the retroactive triggering of measures" explains the European Committee of the Regions rapporteur on CAP reform, Guillaume Cros (FR/PES), Vice-President of the Occitanie Regional Council.
