Reducing EU regulatory burdens on SMEs

On 30 March 2023, the ECON Commission of the European Committee of the Regions will hold a seminar on Reducing EU regulatory burdens on SMEs, organised in cooperation with the EU Institutions and European business associations.

European SMEs are struggling with their post-pandemic economic recovery, amidst the soaring inflation, a severe energy crisis and rising labour market concerns. Meanwhile, the new EU legislation as part of the EU Green Deal imposes, be it directly or indirectly, unprecedented regulatory burdens on SMEs.

As businesses tend to be increasingly vulnerable to regulations conceived and adopted at supranational level, this seminar will discuss the better regulation principles and tools (e.g., impact assessments, SME filters and tests) and how they can be applied to ensure an SME-proof regulatory regime at the EU level.

Invited speakers will discuss how to bring greater regulatory relief to SMEs at EU level, in the context of the upcoming SME Relief Package, as well as through the work of the Fit for Future platform.

The second session will look in detail into the proposed Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D), which is entering a crucial stage of negotiations ahead of the trilogues, with a particular focus on its expected impact on SMEs.

The seminar will take place on Thursday, 30 March from 14:00 to 16:45 at the European Committee of the Regions, Rue Belliard 99-101, Brussels, room JDE 51. Online participation will be possible.

By bringing together local and regional authorities, representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council, as well as EU business associations and entrepreneurs, this conference will represent a unique opportunity to discuss and present new ideas on how to better protect the interests of SMEs in the EU policy-making process.
