6th NAT Commission meeting (Online)

The 6th NAT commission meeting will take place on Friday 29 January 2021 from 11:00 to 17:00.

In light of the current Covid-19 situation, the meeting will be held by videoconference only.

The following opinions will be discussed:

A new approach to the Atlantic maritime strategy – Atlantic action plan 2.0. An updated action plan for a sustainable, resilient and competitive blue economy in the European Union Atlantic area.

Rapporteur: Paula FERNÁNDEZ VIAÑA (ES/renew Europe)

In its first edition, the Atlantic Action Plan was able to inspire a huge number of European projects worth 6 billions of Euro in investments, working towards a safer, cleaner and more developed economically Atlantic Ocean area. An update of the Action Plan – a version 2.0 – will offer even stronger focus on the priorities under the Green Deal and the available new funding possibilities for regional projects and research.

Guest speaker for the discussion on the Draft opinion is Mrs. Charlina VITCHEVA, Director General of European Commission's directorate-general for maritime affairs and fisheries.

Experiences and lessons learned by regions and cities during the COVID-19 crisis

Rapporteur: Joke SCHAUVLIEGE (BE/EPP)

As the level of governance closest to the citizens, cities and regions have been in the front line in the response to the COVID-19 crisis, taking active measures in the diverse policy areas within their competences.

The outlook opinion takes stock of the experiences of local and regional authorities and challenges faced by them in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the recovery out of the crisis. It is an opportunity to bring forward concrete suggestions and recommendations from regions, cities and rural areas to the EU level, in order to improve the response capacities of the EU in future health crisis. Including a local/regional dimension to the national and EU-level response and recovery strategies would make these more effective by taking into account the local circumstances and different realities on the ground.

A health debate will follow together with the exchange of views on three opinions with participation of

- Roberto Ciambetti (IT/ECR) – opinion on European Health Union: Reinforcing the EU’s resilience

- Olgierd Geblewicz (PL/EPP) – opinion on Regulation for tackling cross-border health threats and legislative proposal for changing the mandate of the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC)

- Birgitta Sacrédeus (SE/EPP) – opinion on A pharmaceutical strategy for Europe and legislative proposal for changing the mandate of the European Medicines Agency (EMA)

- Andrea Ammon, Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC )

- Andrzej Jan RYS, DG SANTE, European Commission
