Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Europeiska regionkommitténs ordförande 

Vasco Alves Cordeiro valdes till Europeiska regionkommitténs ordförande i juni 2022.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro föddes i Azorerna, en autonom portugisisk region och ett av EU:s yttersta randområden, den 28 mars 1973. Han är advokat, gift och far till två barn samt ledamot av Azorernas regionparlament.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro har examen i juridik från universitetet i Coimbra och en examen på avancerad nivå i regional rätt från universitetet i Lissabon och universitetet i Azorerna, och inledde sin yrkesbana som advokat i Azorerna 1995, där han arbetade fram till 2003.

År 1996 valdes han för första gången till ledamot av Azorernas regionparlament för socialistpartiet, och han ledde den socialistiska gruppen i regionparlamentet mellan 2000 och 2003.

Sedan dess har han innehaft flera befattningar i regionregeringen, bland annat som ledamot med ansvar för ekonomi (2008–2012), ledamot vid regionpresidentens kansli (2004–2008) med ansvar för EU- och utrikesfrågor samt ledamot med ansvar för jordbruk och fiske (2003–2004).

År 2012 valdes han för första gången till Azorernas regionpresident, en befattning som han omvaldes till 2016. I denna egenskap företrädde han regionen på europeisk och internationell nivå som ledamot av Europeiska regionkommittén samt i organisationer såsom konferensen för perifera kustregioner i Europa, konferensen för presidenter i EU:s yttersta randområden, Europeiska regionförsamlingen och R20 – regioner för klimatåtgärder, och inom ramen för förbindelserna med de länder där det finns många människor med ursprung i Azorerna, t.ex. USA, Kanada och Brasilien. Mellan 2014 och 2020 var han ordförande för konferensen för perifera kustregioner i Europa.

Han har varit ledare för socialistpartiet i Azorerna sedan januari 2013. Vasco Alves Cordeiro är en stark förespråkare av att ta itu med den akuta frågan om medborgarnas stöd för det europeiska projektet, och har också ägnat sig åt att stärka den sociala, ekonomiska och territoriella sammanhållningen i Europeiska unionen genom att verka för en EU-politik som verkligen motsvarar medborgarnas intressen och ambitioner och stärker regionernas roll som grundvalar för unionens interna demokrati och dess ekonomiska och sociala framsteg.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro har varit ledamot av Europeiska regionkommittén sedan 2013, var före det suppleant mellan 2004 och 2008, och var kommitténs första vice ordförande från februari 2020 till juni 2022.
