In remembrance of Paweł Adamowicz 1965-2019

It is with deepest sadness that today we learned Paweł Adamowicz, the Mayor of Gdańsk in Poland and a long standing member of the European Committee of the Regions, passed away having succumbed to injuries sustained during a brutal attack last night.

This unprovoked attack has taken away a colleague, friend, leader, son, brother, father and husband who, at that very moment was working to raise money for others. We stand in solidarity, remembering how precious his and every life is. We stand, united, in condemnation of this act of appalling violence.

His willingness to listen and represent his citizens meant that Paweł was Mayor from 1998 until the present day. His re-election six times over this period is a testament that he was truly a Mayor of the people for the people. He was deeply appreciated for his work creating the city of Gdańsk into an open, dynamic and vibrant city strongly rooted in the European Union. He was always approachable and willing to listen to the citizens of his beloved city Gdańsk, as he used to call it.

A member of our Committee since 2011, he was committed to issues such as entrepreneurship, social inclusion standing up for the rights of migrants and minorities.

Today, we have lost a man that represented the European spirit. Paweł was a true humanitarian, a fighter for human rights and protector of democracy.

Today, we lost a man who represents the founding values of European peace, freedom, solidarity and democracy.
A friend, who will never be forgotten.

Karl-Heinz Lambertz
