Quadruple Helix approach to social innovation ‒ a key to success

The European Commission and the European Committee of the Regions in association with City of Zagreb, City office for social protection and persons with disabilities, is organizing, for the first time in Croatia, an international conference as a part of the Knowledge Exchange Platform on Social Innovation - „Quadruple Helix approach to social innovation ‒ „a key to success", that will be held on the 31st of January 2020 in Hotel International in Zagreb.

The knowledge exchange platform (KEP) is a form of cooperation between the European Committee of the Regions (COR) and European Commission's DG for Research and Innovation (DG RTD). Its main objective is to introduce new solutions in the area of science, research and innovations, as well as innovative products and the best practice as an answer to the numerous social challenges with which local and regional authorities in Europe face.

During the „Quadruple Helix approach to social innovation ‒ „a key to success“ conference, there will be a series of lectures in two thematic blocks: „Social innovations on a European level (including Horizon 2020 projects)“, „Importance of social innovations in Grad Zagreb)“. In addition, a discussion is planned with the members of the European Committee of the Regions.

Through the lectures of guest speakers on themes of accessibility, mobility and social enterprise from Croatia, Poland, England, Belgium, Italy and other EU countries, the participants will be presented with examples of scientific research and other projects financed by EU mechanisms, as well as with methods and possibilities to combine various instruments to support and disseminate good practice, opportunities to improve the local community and co-operate at European level with solutions to common challenges and problems.

The focus of the conference is on the quadruple-helix model, a model of cooperation where, with stakeholders from the public and private sectors and academia, a strong emphasis is placed on citizens and their needs, especially in the development of health, social and other related services. This model brings greater social benefits and empowers citizens who are not only passive consumers of content / services but take on the role of creators of innovation.

Conference speakers include Catherine Naughton - European Disability Forum, Tally Hatzakis – Horizon2020 project "Transport Innovation for Exclusive to Exclusion People Needs Satisfaction", Eirini Kaldeli – Horizon2020 project "Culture Labs - Recipes for Social Innovation", representatives of the European economic and social committee, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL), social innovation experts and public sector stakeholders.
