Joint CoR/OECD Roundtable on Cities and Regions for the SDGs

The CoR and the OECD are organizing the fourth edition of the Cities and Regions for the SDGs roundtable, a two-day online event that will focus on the SDGs as a framework for long-term COVID-19 recovery strategies in cities and regions.

The pandemic exposed and worsened existing vulnerabilities and inequalities causing a severe setback to the progresses made so far to reach the objectives of the Agenda 2030. However, as policy-makers at all levels of government start planning for recovery, it is of outmost importance to call the attention on the opportunity represented by the SDGs as a comprehensive framework, ready to be applied to promote a new sustainable development paradigm. Local and regional authorities have already showed their persistent engagement in the localization of the SDGs, but they will need additional resources and support to plan for a sustainable recovery.

The Roundtable aims at bringing together key stakeholders from cities, regions, national governments, the private sector, civil society, academia, philanthropy and international organisations to:

• Present the preliminary findings of the OECD-CoR Survey on the SDGs as a framework for COVID-19 recovery in cities and regions and related good practices;

• Launch three new OECD pilot reports on A Territorial Approach to the SDGs, and chart the way forward to implement the recommendations on the ground;

• Shape High-level Principles on city-to-city partnerships to localise the SDGs as a contribution to the Italian G20 Presidency;  and

• Discuss the role of higher education institutions to support cities and regions in achieving the SDGs

During the first day, the debate will focus on sustainable post-pandemic recovery. After the opening remarks by OECD Director, Lamia Kamal-Chaoui and CoR Director, Thomas Wobben, CoR Member Ricardo Rio, Mayor of Braga (Portugal) and Rapporteur of the upcoming opinion "Delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030" will present the preliminary findings of the joint CoR/OECD survey on the SDGs as a framework for Covid-19 recovery in cities and regions.

The second day of the event will feature a first panel on the principles of city-to-city partnerships for the localization of the SDGs, while the second panel will be dedicated to the role of universities in supporting local authorities in the preparation of Voluntary Local Reviews.

The online event will take place on 29 – 30 June 2021.
