Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Președintele Comitetului European al Regiunilor 

Vasco Alves Cordeiro a fost ales președinte al Comitetului European al Regiunilor în iunie 2022.

Născut în Azore, regiune autonomă a Portugaliei și regiune ultraperiferică a UE, la 28 martie 1973, Vasco Alves Cordeiro, avocat, căsătorit și tată a doi copii, este membru al Adunării Legislative a Regiunii Autonome Azore.

Licențiat în drept al Universității din Coimbra și titular al unei diplome postuniversitare în drept regional a Universității din Lisabona și a Universității din Azore, Vasco Alves Cordeiro și-a început cariera profesională ca avocat în Azore, în 1995, profesie exercitată până în 2003.

În 1996, a fost ales pentru prima oară membru al Parlamentului Regiunii Autonome a Insulelor Azore din partea Partidului Socialist, iar între 2000 și 2003 a fost lider al grupului socialist din parlamentul regional.

De atunci, a ocupat diverse funcții în cadrul guvernului regional, inclusiv ca secretar regional pentru economie (2008-2012), secretar regional pentru președinția regiunii (2004-2008), responsabil pentru afaceri europene și externe și secretar regional pentru agricultură și pescuit (2003-2004).

În 2012, a fost ales pentru prima oară președinte al Guvernului Regional al Insulelor Azore, fiind reales în această funcție în 2016, și, în această calitate, a reprezentat regiunea la nivel european și internațional ca membru al Comitetului European al Regiunilor și al altor organizații precum Conferința regiunilor maritime periferice din Europa, Conferința președinților regiunilor ultraperiferice ale UE, Adunarea regiunilor europene, R20 (Regiuni pentru politici climatice), precum și în cadrul relațiilor cu țările care găzduiesc comunități din Insulele Azore, printre care SUA, Canada și Brazilia. În perioada 2014-2020, a fost președintele Conferinței regiunilor maritime periferice din Europa.

Dl Cordeiro este liderul Partidului Socialist din Insulele Azore din ianuarie 2013. Susținător convins al necesității de a aborda de urgență chestiunea sprijinului cetățenilor pentru proiectul european, Vasco Alves Cordeiro s-a dedicat, de asemenea, consolidării coeziunii sociale, economice și teritoriale în Uniunea Europeană și a pledat pentru politici europene care să servească cu adevărat intereselor și ambițiilor cetățenilor și să consolideze rolul regiunilor ca bastioane ale democrației interne a Uniunii și ale progresului său economic și social.

Membru al Comitetului European al Regiunilor din 2013 și, anterior, membru supleant în perioada 2004-2008, dl Cordeiro a fost prim-vicepreședinte al instituției din februarie 2020 până în iunie 2022.
