Secretary General attends 50th anniversary of the political working group Lower Bavarian Forest

On 14 April 2018, Secretary General accompanied CoR President Karl-Heinz-Lambertz in Freyung, Lower Bavaria, to attend the ceremony of the 50th anniversary of the political working group Lower Bavarian Forest uniting local and regional politicians from Bavaria and Czech Republic as well as Austria. Together with these local and regional representatives, Mr Lambertz and Mr Burianek discussed the possible scenarios for the future regional strategy of the border region under the forthcoming multiannual financial framework 2021-2027.

The CoR supported the idea of further developing the European region Danube-Vltava into the first Bavarian European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC). An EGTC is a European legal instrument that promotes cross-border and interregional cooperation by inter alia managing on its own right structural funds. It could contribute to strengthening relations with associations of the neighbouring countries. Moreover Secretary General encouraged the border region not only to opt for EU funds but also to involve scientists and agents from the private sector.

The political working group Lower Bavarian Forest in the Bavarian, Austrian and Czech triangle was founded in 1967 in order to reduce unemployment and to strengthen the weak infrastructure at that time. Even long before the fall of the Iron Curtain, it started relationships with its Czech counterparts that have been constantly cultivated until now.
