President von der Leyen to attend publication of CoR's first Regional and local Barometer (12 October 11h00 - 12h00)

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič will participate on 12 October in the Plenary session of the European Committee of the Regions at the occasion of the presentation of the first Annual Regional and Local Barometer by the CoR President, Apostolos Tzitzikostas. The presentation will begin at 11am, and can be followed via the CoR website.

President von der Leyen and Vice-President Šefčovič's participation offers them an opportunity to discuss the local and regional dimension of the European Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, foster the debate on the future of Europe, and explore how to strengthen cooperation between the European Commission and the European Committee of the Regions. The presentation of the first-ever CoR Annual Regional and Local Barometer will likewise contribute to the debate on the future of cohesion policy by providing facts and findings on the economic, health and social impact on the COVID crisis on EU's regions and cities. The Barometer also includes the results of an opinion poll on perceptions of regional and local authorities and of their role in the EU's decision-making process.

Background

The 2020 Annual Regional and Local Barometer aims to give a picture of the impact of the coronavirus on the health, economies, and communities of the EU's regions and cities. It includes the findings of a poll, conducted in the first half of September, in which over 26,000 Europeans were asked about their trust in local, regional and national governments and the EU, and in response to the pandemic by these levels of government.  The Annual Regional and Local Barometer (#EURegionalBarometer) is timed to coincide with the European Week of Regions and Cities (#EURegionsWeek), which is co-organised by the CoR and by the European Commission.
