WEBINAR SERIES | From Agreement to Action The key role of subnational and local governments in the Global Biodiversity Framework implementation

To keep the momentum going of subnational governments and cities’ achievements leading up to and during UN Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) COP15, ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center and partners United Nations Environment Programme, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, International Union for Conservation of Nature, (IUCN), European Committee of the Regions (CoR), and Regions4 kindly encourages participation to attend the webinar series titled “From agreement to action: the key role of subnational and local governments in the Global Biodiversity Framework implementation”

The series comprises 5 thematic sessions linking the Kunming-Montréal GBF Decisions with actions subnational governments and cities can take to meet these goals. Each online session will include inspiring and informative presentations and panel discussions from experts and political leaders. The webinars allow sharing tools, resources and/or best practices.

25 May 2023, 17:00 CET – Raising Ambition: the importance of subnational and local governments to reach the 30x30 targets for restoration and conservation

The objective of this session is to identify the most effective options for subnational and local actions to ensuring at least 30% of areas of degraded terrestrial, inland water, and marine and coastal ecosystems are under effective restoration (Target 2); and also ensure and enable that by 2030 at least 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas, and of marine and coastal areas are effectively conserved through systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (Target 3).

The session begins with goodwill messages from high level speakers to endorse the role of regions and cities and motivate all levels of subnational governments in participating in the GBF and the 30x30 target, as their support is necessary to restore nature.

A multilevel panel between a technical expert, a CBD Party, a subnational government and a city will take place to identify the best governance and management approaches to restore and conserve nature. The dialogue will serve to build a momentum towards a global-local deal to safeguard nature and humanity's future.

Organizer: ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Centre, with support of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and Regions4.
