NAT - 22nd commission meeting

The 22nd NAT commission meeting will be held on 29 January 2019 in Brussels.

The following working documents will be discussed:

  • Cross-border dimension in disaster risk reduction (DRR)

(Rapporteur: Roberto CIAMBETTI (IT/ECR))

Disasters know no borders. They are also becoming more frequent, extreme and complex due to climate change, rapid urbanisation, improper land-use, etc., increasing both direct losses in human lives as well as economic losses irrespective of national borders. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the cross-border dimension in disaster risk reduction, addressing the obstacles to local and regional cross-border cooperation and highlighting the benefits of it, particularly with the view to optimising local responses in the event of a disaster, increasing resilience to disasters and facilitating learning and exchange of good practices to further develop cross-border cooperation to reduce and prevent disaster risks.

  • Towards a comprehensive European Union framework on endocrine disruptors

(Rapporteur: Uno SILBERG (EE/EA))

Endocrine disruptors are everywhere. In our food, cosmetics, plastic containers we use to bring lunch to the office, in toys we give to our little ones. They interact with our hormonal systems and make them go wrong. They are increasingly recognised to be the cause of the rise in obesity, autism, infertility and other serious conditions. And yet, these chemicals are not treated as dangerous under the EU law. In some areas they have recently been prohibited (in pesticides, as of this autumn); in others they can still be used freely (e.g. food contact material).

Reacting to the recent communication from the Commission, the NAT will draw on its broad expertise in health, consumer protection, agriculture and fisheries to discuss the weakness of the current system and come forward with proposals to align the legislation in a way it offers the highest possible protection to Europeans.

  • A new European agenda to speed up the development of maritime industries

(Rapporteur: Christophe CLERGEAU (FR/PES))

In his own-initiative opinion on "Maritime Industries" CoR rapporteur Mr Christophe Clergeau (FR/PES) aims to introduce a new European agenda to accelerate the development of maritime industries. The topic is of particular importance for coastal communities and their transition to a sustainable maritime economy while facing increasing competition from third countries. Members of the NAT commission and interested parties are invited to submit their feedback on the topic to the secretariat (nat@cor.europa.eu) until 01 February 2019.

Debate on Smart villages: Integrated strategic approaches to innovation in rural areas

Across the EU, there are many inspiring projects at regional and local level exploring new approaches to health services, care, education, mobility, energy, broadband and others. The policy areas to be discussed during this workshop would be centred around how the smart villages initiative can be promoted in all structural policies after 2020.
