Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Presidente do Comité das Regiões Europeu 

Vasco Alves Cordeiro foi eleito presidente do Comité das Regiões Europeu em junho de 2022.

Nascido nos Açores em 28 de março de 1973, Vasco Alves Cordeiro, advogado, casado e pai de dois filhos, é deputado à Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores, uma região autónoma de Portugal e região ultraperiférica da UE.

Licenciado em Direito pela Universidade de Coimbra e pós-graduado em Direito Regional pela Universidade de Lisboa e pela Universidade dos Açores, Vasco Alves Cordeiro exerceu advocacia nos Açores entre 1995 e 2003.

Em 1996, foi eleito pela primeira vez deputado à Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores pelo Partido Socialista, tendo exercido, entre 2000 e 2003, as funções de líder da bancada socialista no parlamento regional.

Desde então, ocupou diversos cargos no executivo regional, nomeadamente de secretário regional da Economia (2008-2012), secretário regional da Presidência (2004-2008), responsável pelos Assuntos Europeus e Externos, e secretário regional da Agricultura e Pescas (2003-2004).

Foi eleito presidente do Governo Regional dos Açores em 2012, tendo sido reeleito no cargo em 2016. No exercício das suas funções, representou a região a nível europeu e internacional enquanto membro do Comité das Regiões Europeu e de organizações como a Conferência das Regiões Periféricas Marítimas da Europa, a Conferência dos Presidentes das Regiões Ultraperiféricas da UE, a Assembleia das Regiões da Europa, a R20 – Regions of Climate Action [Regiões de Ação Climática], e no quadro das relações com países que acolhem comunidades açorianas, nomeadamente os Estados Unidos, o Canadá e o Brasil. De 2014 a 2020, foi presidente da Conferência das Regiões Periféricas Marítimas da Europa.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro é presidente do Partido Socialista dos Açores desde janeiro de 2013. Acérrimo defensor da urgência de enfrentar a questão da adesão dos cidadãos ao projeto europeu, Vasco Alves Cordeiro tem-se igualmente dedicado ao reforço da coesão social, económica e territorial na União Europeia, defendendo políticas europeias que correspondam realmente aos interesses e às ambições dos cidadãos e reforcem o papel das regiões, enquanto bastiões da democracia interna da União, e o seu progresso económico e social.

Membro suplente do Comité das Regiões Europeu entre 2004 a 2008 e membro efetivo desde 2013, Vasco Alves Cordeiro exerceu o cargo de primeiro vice-presidente deste órgão entre fevereiro de 2020 e junho de 2022.
