Secretary General rewards EU communication activities at Europcom
Secretary presented on 9 November the European Public Communication Awards during the opening session of Europcom, the annual meeting for communication managers and experts from local, regional, national and European authorities organised by the CoR on 9-10 November 2017.

It is the 5th time that European Public Communication Award rewards impactful and innovative EU communication activities from local, regional or national public authorities.
This year, the province of Antwerp won the main prize for its 'Pop up Europa' initiative. A special prize was also awarded to a group of 20 students from 9 European countries for their 'Why Europe' campaign.

Antwerp province's winning 'Pop up Europa' campaign, launched in May 2017, takes a new creative, inspiring and real local approach by bringing Europe to its municipalities. It organises discussions about Europe with exhibitions, theatre plays, movies, contests, and school activities. By combining a mix of activities for all kinds of audiences, Pop up Europe reaches out to all people, not only well-informed or pro-EU citizens. Another plus point for the project is that it can be customized and therefore can be applied in every city or municipality in the EU.

The special award was given to celebrate a citizen-led innovative communication project designed to boost citizens engagement with the EU. This went to 'WhyEurope', a pro-EU grassroots initiative founded by students of the University of Tübingen in Germany. WhyEurope mainly focuses on social media (see their facebook page in German ). With a reach between 700,000 to 2.4 million people per month on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, WhyEurope seeks to spread 'positive populism' about Europe by using emotional pictures and simple messages to explain the benefits the EU offers.

The EuroPCom Advisory Board evaluated the merits of 19 applications in total, focusing on impact, creativity and innovation, and ties to multilevel partnership and EU communication priorities.

More than 1000 EU communication professionals attended the event, a record number of participants, to discuss how to improve communication of EU policies in a way to build trust of citizens in the EU. It was organised by the CoR, in close cooperation with the European Parliament, the Council, the Commission, the Economic and Social Committee and the Estonian Presidency of the EU.
