Stakeholder consultation on Strengthening STE(A)M education in the EU

The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is drafting an own-initiative opinion on Strengthening STE(A)M education in the EU. The opinion will examine, in line with the principle of multi-level governance, how local and regional authorities can help to address the existing shortcomings in training courses in STEM subjects, the STEM workforce and STEM-related jobs.

Three shortcomings have been observed in relation to STEM in recent decades:

  • there is a Europe-wide shortage of teachers specialised in STEM at all levels of education;
  •
    in many cases, students' interest in STEM is decreasing;
  • the results produced by the education system are not always in line with the needs of the labour market.

Appropriate planning, the establishment of local and regional partnerships and cooperation with employers are needed in order to provide an effective response to these problems. Since only nine Member States currently have a national STEM strategy, it is up to local and regional authorities to manage the issue more appropriately.

The rapporteur of the opinion, Mr Csaba BORBOLY (RO/EPP), President of Harghita County Council, together with his expert, Mr László CSÁK, would be happy to meet with representatives of your organisation and other important stakeholders for a consultation and an exchange of views on the relevant topics of this opinion to gather the different points of views and discuss the main issues.

The consultation will take place on:

Monday, 18 March 2019 from 2 to 4 p.m.

at the European Committee of the Regions

(Rue Van Maerlant 2, B-1040 Brussels)

Room VMA 1
