High-level Webinar of the Baltic Sea Region - Towards Sustainable Economic Transition

We have the pleasure to invite you to the High-level Webinar of the Baltic Sea Region – Towards Sustainable Economic Transformation over Zoom on the 28th of September 2020 with Maroš Šefčovič, Vice President, Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight, European Commission and Markku Markkula, Vice President, European Committee of the Regions.

The event focuses on the future opportunities of the Baltic Sea Region in order to speed-up sustainable economic transformation and implementing SDGs, while contributing to the post-crisis's recovery and resilience.

We attempt to look behind the scenes at how regions embed Smart Specialisation Strategies in their regional, economic, and spatial development policies. By working with nine regions in each of the Baltic Sea Region countries we have intended to get an insight into how Smart Specialisation Strategy affects the future prospects of the regions. During the event the new book 'Sustainable Baltic Sea Region – towards Economic Transformation by Smart Specialisation Strategies' will be launched.

This webinar can be considered a sequel to the SEDEC/ERRIN/Friends of Smart specialisation webinar of 22 June, and of the JRC webinar of 17 September, aiming to discuss and highlight the potential of regional smart specialisation strategies in implementing ambitious EU policies in such areas as the Green Deal and the Digital Transition.

The CoR has been advocating closer synergies between the EU research and innovation policies on the one hand and the EU regional development policies.

In this context, the CoR has considered that the local innovation dimension, regional and cross-border cooperation, and multi-level governance, should be strengthened. Moreover, the CoR is committed to channelling in to the EU decision making process the views and needs of the local and regional authorities across the EU, and sharing best practice and expertise about the role of regional smart specialisation in facing the current challenges for policy and investment.
