Local and regional leaders warn that Europe will never reach its goals over the years 2021-27 without increasing resources to 1.3% of EU27's gross national income (GNI), a position shared by the European Parliament. They oppose cuts to the EU’s cohesion policy and agriculture, and urge Member States and EU institutions to make new means available for cities and regions to invest in jobs, climate action and integration.

Op 8 oktober wordt in Brussel de Europese week van regio’s en steden geopend met een debat over “De toekomst van Europa is samenhang” , onder leiding van de voorzitter van het Comité van de Regio's (CvdR), Karl-Heinz Lambertz, de voorzitter van de Europese Commissie, Jean-Claude Juncker, EU-Commissaris Corinna Creţu en de ondervoorzitter van het Europees Parlement, Pavel Telicka. De volgende dag zal voorzitter Lambertz, in aanwezigheid van de voorzitter van het Europees Parlement, zijn visie op de toekomst van Europa uiteenzetten tijdens zijn jaarlijkse toespraak over de “Staat van de Europese Unie: het standpunt van de regio's en steden” . Tijdens de zitting zal het CvdR ook adviezen over de EU-begroting en over onderwerpen als migratie, onderzoek, klimaatactie en kunststoffen voor eenmalig gebruik goedkeuren.
