Integration of Migrants and Refugees in Small Territories: A factor for local development

The European Committee of the Regions (CoR), in partnership with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB), the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), the SHARE network and the Urban partnership for inclusion of migrants and refugees, invites you to the Seminar: Integration of migrants and refugees as a factor for local development in in small territories.

This seminar is organised as part of the Cities and regions for integration initiative launched last 10 April by the CoR President Lambertz, and is the first of a series of events for local politicians and experts to discuss how to support integration of migrants in Europe.

Academics and researchers will set the scene by presenting recent studies on the topic. The seminar will them move to discuss how sustainable migrant integration in small and medium size cities and rural areas could become a factor for regional development, reviving void housing and fallow spaces, contributing to the demand in public and private service provision (e.g. education, healthcare, leisure and commerce), lowering skill shortages and creating new economic and social-cultural activities.  Representatives from small cities, towns and villages will present their experiences. Regional authorities and national authorities will be also present to explore how they can support better integration in small and medium size cities, for example through improved urban-rural linkages, or designing reallocation and resettlement scheme with the local actors.
