5th European Summit of Regions and Cities

The 5th European Summit of Regions and Cities was organised by the Committee of the Regions in partnership with the City of Copenhagen and the Capital Region of Denmark. It brought together about 700 participants, half of which elected regional or local representatives, with a view to ensuring that sustainable urban development features more prominently on the political agenda.

Under the title of “The European urban fabric in the 21st century” the event benefited from the insights of high-level speakers on two major topics on the EU agenda: urban development and the green economy. Representatives of local and regional authorities, of European and international institutions and associations, leading architects, urban planners and researchers. They illustrated and reflected on how the EU has shaped its cities and what type of future European urban policies and strategies are relevant for regional development alike.

20 years after the historic Earth Summit of 1992 and with a view to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, the Summit made it possible to demonstrate the key role of cities and regions in designing and implementing a sustainable model of urban development. The “Copenhagen Declaration” expresses the commitment to making cities greener, more socially inclusive and more economically competitive.

The exhibition "Beautiful, green, smart and inclusive: Colourful cities" linked concrete best practice examples from cities and regions to the Summit's conference programme. It will be shown in Brussels at the CoR premises between 7 May and 1 June and at the European Commission headquarters in the Berlaymont building during the 10th European Week of Regions and Cities, between 8 and 11 October 2012.
