On 13 July 2021, the CoR, in cooperation with the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, will hold the Enlargement Day. After June's meetings of the CoR's Working Groups and Joint Consultative Committees with candidate countries and potential candidates, this unique annual event, organized online this year, will discuss the role of regions and cities in the EU accession process and sustainable recovery pathways in the region.

Amb. Iztok Jarc, Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the EU, keynote speaker Erwan Fouéré from CEPS will stir the debate with the panellists and the audience on the question 'Is the EU Enlargement agenda fit for purpose?' In the first thematic session, panelists (including Dr Majlinda Bregu, Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council, Milena Lazarević, Programme Director, European Policy Centre, Belgrade,
Antonio Ratković, first Vice-President of the Network of Associations of Local Authorities of South-East Europe (NALAS) and Mayor of the City of Sombor (Serbia) and
Wolfgang Nozar, Deputy Head of Unit, Enlargement Strategy, DG NEAR) will debate the EU accession process and the role of local and regional authorities.
For the central part of the event, a high-level panel (with EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations
Olivér Várhelyi, State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia
Gašper Dovžan, and CoR rapporteur on the Enlargement Package 2020,
Nikola Dobroslavić) will debate ways and means for a sustainable recovery in the enlargement countries.
The green and digital transition for recovery and resilience will be the focus of the second thematic session, with, among others, Dragana Sotirovski
, Mayor of Niš, Tunç Soyer
, Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, Anuela Ristani, Vice Mayor of Tirana, CoR member Satu Haapanen
, from the Network of Associations of Local Authorities of South-East Europe (NALAS). The CoR rapporteur on the Enlargement Package 2020, Nikola Dobroslavić
, will conclude the event.
The interactive and dynamic sessions will be moderated respectively by Nenad Šebek, independent journalist from Belgrade, Dr Corina Stratulat from the European Policy Centre (EPC) and Ivana Dragičević, TV journalist from Zagreb (N1).
