The European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is ready to launch another intensive week of awareness-raising activities from 19 to 27 November 2022. For its 14th edition, 16129 actions related to waste reduction, product reuse, repair, materials recycling, as well as clean-ups will be carried out across 30 countries in Europe and beyond.
The EWWR is a leading international campaign promoting waste prevention during a single week in November. It brings together participants from various backgrounds and sectors – schools, public administrations, companies, NGOs but also citizens – to organise awareness-raising actions at different levels: local, regional, national, and even international. The objective of these actions is to change the behaviour surrounding consumption and production patterns and waste generation habits with the aim of contributing to reaching waste reduction and climate neutrality targets.
The transition to circular and sustainable textiles
The 14th edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction explores the
topic of
Circular and Sustainable Textiles,
analysing the impact that the textile sector has on our planet and society.
It inspires not only citizens as consumers to take action by, for instance,
changing their way of using and buying clothes, but also public
authorities, private companies and NGOs to be protagonists in the
transition to a more circular textile industry by promoting, supporting and
guiding new solutions of production, use, disposal, and reuse of the
textile.
Luca Menesini,
President of the Province of Lucca and CoR rapporteur on the
EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles,
said:
“the European Committee of the Regions is preparing an opinion on the
EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles that will include
considerations on reducing waste, decreasing the burden on local and
regional communities that have to collect and manage it.”
Chiel Berends, European Commission,
said:
“there is significant potential to reduce textile waste. The actions
organised during the EWWR lead the way.”
The textile and clothing industry is one of the most polluting sectors,
together with housing, transport, and food. This is caused by the strong
impact it has on land use, water pollution, and even greenhouse emissions.
This sector has a high environmental and social impact in every phase: from
production to distribution, use, and after-use (collection, sorting,
recycling, and final waste management, which is most of the time related to
incineration and landfilling). A change is needed! And the EWWR wants to be
part of this transition.

The European Week for Waste Reduction is led by the
EWWR Steering Committee. Its members are: ACR+ (Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable
Resource management), ADEME (Agency of the ecological transition, France),
