Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

A Régiók Európai Bizottsága elnöke 

Vasco Alves Cordeirót 2022 júniusában megválasztották a Régiók Európai Bizottsága elnökének.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro 1973. március 28-án született az Azori-szigeteken, Portugália egyik autonóm régiójában, amely egyben az EU egyik legkülső régiója is. Ügyvéd, nős, két gyermek édesapja és az Azori-szigetek autonóm régió törvényhozó gyűlésének tagja.

A Coimbrai Egyetemen végezte jogi tanulmányait, majd posztgraduális diplomát szerzett a regionális jog területén a Lisszaboni Egyetemen és az Azori-szigeteki Egyetemen. Ügyvédi pályafutását 1995-ben kezdte meg az Azori-szigeteken, ahol 2003-ig folytatta tevékenységét.

1996-ban első alkalommal választották meg az Azori-szigetek autonóm régió törvényhozó gyűlésének tagjává a szocialista párt képviseletében. 2000 és 2003 között a regionális parlament szocialista csoportját vezette.

Azóta számos tisztséget töltött be a regionális kormányban, többek között a gazdaságért (2008–2012), az európai ügyekért és külügyekért (2004–2008), valamint a mezőgazdaságért és halászatért felelős regionális titkár (2003–2004) is volt.

2012-ben első alkalommal választották meg az Azori-szigetek regionális kormányának elnökévé, amely tisztségre 2016-ban újraválasztották, és e minőségében európai és nemzetközi szinten képviselte a régiót a Régiók Európai Bizottsága, valamint olyan szervezetek tagjaként, mint az Európai Külső Tengeri Régiók Konferenciája, a legkülső uniós régiók elnöki értekezlete, az Európai Régiók Közgyűlése, az R20 – az éghajlat-politikai fellépéseket támogató régiók szövetsége, illetve az azori közösségeknek otthont adó országokkal, köztük az USA-val, Kanadával és Brazíliával fenntartott kapcsolatok keretében. 2014 és 2020 között az Európai Külső Tengeri Régiók Konferenciájának elnöke volt.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro 2013 januárja óta az Azori-szigetek Szocialista Pártjának vezetője. Vasco Alves Cordeiro elkötelezett szószólója annak, hogy sürgősen figyelmet kell szentelni az európai projekt polgári támogatottsága kérdésének. Emellett nagyon fontos számára az Európai Unió társadalmi, gazdasági és területi kohéziójának erősítése is, és olyan európai szakpolitikák mellett száll síkra, amelyek ténylegesen a polgárok érdekeit és törekvéseit szolgálják, valamint megerősítik azt a szerepet, amelyet a régiók töltenek be az Unió belső demokráciájának, valamint gazdasági és társadalmi fejlődésének védőbástyáiként.

2013 óta a Régiók Európai Bizottságának tagja, ezt megelőzően, 2004 és 2008 között pedig póttagként tevékenykedett. Vasco Alves Cordeiro 2020 februárja és 2022 júniusa között az intézmény első alelnöki tisztségét töltötte be.
