The European Committee of the Regions will host the ceremony of the Transformative Action Award 2018 next November 15 in Brussels. The three finalists are the
City of Bologna (Italy), the
City of Ghent (Belgium) and the
City of Tirana (Albania). The winning city will receive €10.000 to kick-start a transformative action in its territory.
The EU's assembly of regional and local representatives is pleased and honoured to support cities committed to bring positive change. That is the objective of the
Transformative Action Award which annually rewards cities that address the pathways of the
Basque declaration to create productive, sustainable and resilient cities for a liveable and inclusive Europe. The award is co-organised by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, The Basque Country and the City of Aalborg (Denmark).
The European Committee of the Regions will once again host the Transformative Action Award ceremony, now in its second edition. It will be on 15 November 2018 during the meeting of the
Commission for Environment, Climate Change and Energy and (ENVE) in Brussels.
The 2018 edition of the Transformative Action Award received 40 applications. These are the finalists:
- The
City of Bologna (Italy) received a nomination for entering into collaborative pacts with their citizens in order to increase civic engagement and regenerate urban commons.
- The
City of Ghent (Belgium) is in the final stage for seeking to transform the city's local food system through participative governance models.
- The
City of Tirana (Albania) is a finalist for increasing urban green space around the city to counteract urban sprawl.
Cor Lamers (NL/EPP), Mayor of Schiedam, ENVE chair and Jury Member said: “I am extremely pleased to discover that the 2018 Transformative Action Award attracted so many applicants from across Europe. These participative projects make our local communities and local economies more inclusive, green and sustainable. As a result, they provide better quality of life to our citizens. I hope that these initiatives will serve as examples to be replicated everywhere and unleash a chain reaction of transformational actions in our regions and cities."
In addition to Cor Lamers, this year's jury is comprised of Hakan Lucius, Head of Civil Society Division, European Investment Bank, Wolfgang Teubner, Regional Director ICLEI Europe, Arantza Acha, Director UNESCO Etxea, and Thomas Kastrup-Larsen, Mayor of Aalborg, Denmark.
Background information
The
Basque Declaration outlines new pathways for European Cities and Towns to create productive, sustainable and resilient cities for a liveable and inclusive Europe. The document aims to support and accelerate socio-cultural, socio-economic and technological transformation. The Basque Declaration is the next step for local sustainability following the
Aalborg Charter (1994) and the
Aalborg Commitments (2004). The Basque Declaration highlights the need for ambitious local leaders to think outside the box and find innovative ways to engage with civil society in order to meet economic, environmental and social challenges and at the same time marks the importance of finding sustainable solutions that increase economic value for the benefit of the local population.
ICLEI Europe – Local Governments for Sustainability is the leading global network of over 1,500 cities, towns and regions committed to building a sustainable future. By helping the ICLEI Network to become sustainable, low-carbon, ecomobile, resilient, biodiverse, resource-efficient, healthy and happy, with a green economy and smart infrastructure, we impact over 25% of the global urban population.
