Athens Democracy Forum award goes to Mayor Paweł Adamowicz

The international Athens Democracy Forum prize has been awarded posthumously to the Mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz. His wife Magdalena and their daughters Antonina and Teresa received the award from the Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis at a ceremony in the Greek capital on Thursday, 10 October.

The ceremony took place in the ancient Roman Forum, close to the Acropolis. The prize was awarded by the Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis, accompanied by the President of the European Council Donald Tusk.

Paweł Adamowicz, Mayor of the Polish city of Gdańsk and a long-standing member of the European Committee of the Regions, died as a result of injuries sustained during a violent attack in January 2019. The prize recognises his contribution to democracy in Europe. Mr Adamowicz was also committed to issues such as entrepreneurship, social inclusion and the defence of the rights of immigrants and minorities.

Donald Tusk said: "He fell victim to hatred, which he opposed all his life. He was not an ancient hero, like Demetrius Poliorcetes, he did not conquer or destroy other cities. He built his city with the belief that not everything is lost, that love is stronger than hate, that solidarity is stronger than egoism."

The Athens Democracy Forum is a three-day meeting of politicians and intellectuals (9-11 October), at which politicians, international business leaders, students, experts and journalists try to find answers to the challenges facing today's world.

The Forum is organised by the New York Times and endorsed by the UN Secretary General. This year's event is the latest in a series of annual meetings and the theme is “Reinventing Democracy: new models for our changing world".
