Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Predsjednik Europskog odbora regija 

U lipnju 2022. za predsjednika Europskog odbora regija izabran je Vasco Alves Cordeiro.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro, rođen 28. ožujka 1973. na Azorima, koja je ujedno i jedna od autonomnih regija Portugala i jedna od najudaljenijih regija EU-a, odvjetnik je, oženjen i otac dvoje djece, te član Zakonodavne skupštine Autonomne regije Azora.

Diplomirao je pravo na Sveučilištu u Coimbri, a poslijediplomski studij regionalnog prava završio je na Sveučilištu u Lisabonu i Sveučilištu na Azorima. Svoju profesionalnu karijeru započeo je 1995. kao odvjetnik na Azorima, gdje je radio do 2003. godine.

Godine 1996. prvi je put izabran za člana Zakonodavne skupštine Autonomne regije Azora, kao predstavnik Socijalističke stranke, a od 2000. do 2003. u tom je parlamentu bio predsjednik kluba socijalista.

Od tada je obnašao nekoliko dužnosti u regionalnoj vladi, među ostalim dužnost regionalnog tajnika za gospodarstvo (2008. – 2012.), regionalnog tajnika Predsjedništva (2004. – 2008.), koji je nadležan i za europske i vanjske poslove, te regionalnog tajnika za poljoprivredu i ribarstvo (2003. – 2004.).

Godine 2012. prvi je put izabran za predsjednika regionalne vlade Azora. Na tu je dužnost ponovno izabran 2016. i u tom je svojstvu predstavljao svoju regiju na europskoj i međunarodnoj razini kao član Europskog odbora regija te organizacija kao što su Konferencija rubnih primorskih regija Europe, Konferencija predsjednika najudaljenijih regija EU-a, Skupština europskih regija i R20 – Regije za klimatsku politiku, te u okviru odnosa sa zemljama u kojima žive zajednice stanovnika s Azora, primjerice, u odnosima s SAD-om, Kanadom i Brazilom. Od 2014. do 2020. bio je predsjednik Konferencije rubnih primorskih regija Europe.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro čelnik je Socijalističke stranke Azora od siječnja 2013. Kao velik pobornik hitne potrebe angažiranja na pitanju podrške građana europskome projektu, Vasco Alves Cordeiro također se posvetio jačanju socijalne, ekonomske i teritorijalne kohezije u Europskoj uniji, zalažući se za europske politike koje istinski odgovaraju interesima i ambicijama građana i jačaju ulogu regija kao temelja unutarnje demokracije Unije te njezina gospodarskog i socijalnog napretka.

Član je Europskog odbora regija od 2013., a od 2004. do 2008. bio je zamjenski član. Vasco Alves Cordeiro bio je prvi potpredsjednik Odbora od veljače 2020. do lipnja 2022.
