Polaiteoirí áitiúla i gcroílár na hEorpa

MembersContent

Tá sé de chumhacht ag ár gcuid comhaltaí dul i bhfeidhm ar thodhchaí na hEorpa ón mbonn aníos. Déanann siad ionadaíocht ar an milliún ceannaire tofa áitiúil san Aontas agus tagann siad le chéile i gCoiste Eorpach na Réigiún lena chinntiú go n-éistear le riachtanais, le huaillmhianta agus le spriocanna na milliún saoránach agus go ndéantar beart dá réir dá réir.

Tá riarthóirí áitiúla i measc na bpolaiteoirí is iontaofa san Eoraip. Is saineolaithe iad toisc gurb iadsan na polaiteoirí is gaire don mhéid atá ag tarlú i ndáiríre inár mbailte, inár gcathracha agus inár réigiúin. Lá i ndiaidh lae, is féidir teacht orthu agus a gcuid muinchillí craptha aníos acu agus iad i mbun oibre inár bpobail, iad gnóthach ag iarraidh teacht ar réitigh ar dhúshláin, idir bheag agus mhór.

Trí na riarthóirí áitiúla a chur ar ais i gcroílár na cinnteoireachta Eorpaí, déanann Coiste Eorpach na Réigiún iad a aontú trí chuspóir inspioráideach: A chinntiú go dtugann an tAontas Eorpach aird ar an méid atá ag tarlú ar an leibhéal réigiúnach agus go dtuigeann sé é chomh maith, agus réitigh seanbhunaithe agus phraiticiúla a chur chun cinn, gar dár bpobal.

Sin é an fáth gurb é Coiste Eorpach na Réigiún an institiúid ar mian leis na mílte ionadaithe áitiúla ballraíocht a ghlacadh ann, a bheith rannpháirteach ann agus a chur lena fhorbairt. Tagann ár gcuid comhaltaí as gach cearn den Eoraip – níl le déanamh ach zúmáil nó cliceáil ar an léarscáil chun d’ionadaí a aimsiú agus chun dul i dteagmháil leis nó léi ag Coiste Eorpach na Réigiún.

Sracfhéachaint ar Choiste Eorpach na Réigiún

  • 300 réigiún
  • 100 000 údarás áitiúla
  • 1 mhilliún polaiteoir áitiúil
  • Ag déanamh ionadaíocht do 441 milliún saoránach

  • 6 sheisiún iomlánacha bliantúla
  • Na céadta cruinnithe áitiúla agus idirnáisiúnta

Thousands local and regional leaders are on the front line in the battle to limit the spread of the virus and manage its impact on the ground. Their professionalism and dedication is testified to by their actions from all corners of Europe.

The CoR is the interface and reference point between the European Union and its local and regional governments. In the current crisis, we are working to assist, inform, engage and represent regions and cities by sharing news and information through the Covid-19 Exchange Platform.

As part of this effort, we are publishing stories, solutions and responses from Members, local and regional bodies, and partners who are facing similar challenges. Zoom or click on the map to read messages from your region or from across Europe. Most of these inputs were collected and shared by the CoR's Political Groups – – on their websites.

These contributions will provide an on-the-ground reality check of the EU's measures to fight the pandemic and can serve as evidence to improve EU policies based on the experiences at local and regional level.

In the words of Apostolos Tzitzikostas, President of the European Committee of the Regions and Governor of the Region of Central Macedonia, Greece: "The road ahead is uncertain, and communities urgently need help today to not only protect lives, but also to rebuild in the aftermath. Across Europe we must be able to work in partnership and fairly share the responsibility. The European Union must offer support and solidarity to those most in need: never has this been more true than during the unfolding pandemic crisis. Regions and cities will remain on the front line in the fight against the virus. Our first duty as political leaders during these difficult times is to our citizens. We must join forces at local, regional, national and European level to protect them."

To share your personal experiences, ideas, proposals, video messages, write to this address: covid19@cor.europa.eu.

The current unprecedented crisis has put to the test all aspects of our life, including cross-border and transnational cooperation which is facing its most challenging times in decades. Over the night, Member States closed their borders across the European Union without consulting their neighbours. This instantly put different sectors of our economy into a very difficult position, with some sectors, in certain regions, facing potential collapse.

On the other hand, the crisis has also shown the incredible resourcefulness, ingenuity and solidarity between the peoples of Europe, proving once again that cross-border cooperation is not only wanted by Europe's citizens, but it is also essential for the livelihoods of many of them.

The CoR has partnered with the European Commission (DG REGIO) and  the leading associations working in the field of cross-border cooperation in Europe; the Mission Operationelle Transfrontalière (MOT), the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) and the Central European Service for Cross-border Initiatives (CESCI), to pool resources together and publish the many cross-border stories and experiences in one place – on this platform.

The stories and experiences that will be gathered through the COVID 19 Platform will be used to support an in-depth analysis of what the crisis means for cross-border and transnational cooperation and how cooperation across borders can help address this new situation. The outcomes will subsequently serve as the basis for our future policy proposals.

The European Union has set itself the objective of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050, a target that the European Commission's president, Ursula von der Leyen, has described as the "greatest challenge and opportunity of our times".

The European Committee of the Regions is committed to playing a full part in achieving this objective and to ensuring that local and regional perspectives are always reflected in the European Green Deal, the EU roadmap to carbon neutrality. The Green Deal sets out objectives, principles, and tools in policy areas ranging from emissions reduction and industrial policy to agriculture and biodiversity.

Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Governor of Central Macedonia, said in his inaugural speech as President of the European Committee of the Regions in 2020 that one of his priorities would be to "translate the Green Deal into local climate action while supporting the communities who will be the most affected". President Tzitzikostas added that "the fight against climate change will be won or lost in our regions and cities". The European Committee of the Regions has been a patron of the Covenant of Mayors since its creation in 2008 and is a long-standing advocate of a greater role for regions and cities in global governance of climate action.

The #EUGreenDeal map is an emerging and evolving effort by the European Committee of the Regions to show the steps being taken across the EU by regions and cities to decarbonise the European economy. It shows how individual communities are transforming their way of living and working, of producing and consuming, and how they are trying to achieve environmentally sustainable and socially and economically just growth.

Do you want to share your Green Deal local best practice? Submit your Best Practice in our Open Call or drop an e-mail to enve@cor.europa.eu.

To find fuller details about our legislative and political work on climate action, please visit the page of the CoR's Green Deal Going Local working group. The upload of the Best Practices submitted through the last call launched by the ENVE secretariat is currently ongoing.

The #FridayForFuture protests show that young people are ready to engage in the fight against climate change. Young local and regional politicians are key to translating this impetus into policies and actions to achieve climate neutrality.

In yellow on this map, you will find environmental best practices already implemented or being planned by local and regional politicians who are members of the Young Elected Politicians' network.
