COVID-19: Case studies of CoR Members from the Political Groups

The political groups in the European Committee of the Regions have collected many of the examples of the challenges faced by their members, and their responses, as well as ideas about how the EU could help them.

European People's Party: Examples available on a special webpage include a decision by the governor of Central Macedonia – CoR President Apostolos Tzitzikostas (EL) – to donate 50% of his salary and house-to-house video meetings by Eddy van Hijum (NL), Commissioner from the Province of Overijssel. The mayor of Gabrovo, Tanya Hristova (BG), has mobilised a local textile-maker to make protective clothing, while Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, president of Andalucía (ES), highlights his region's development of a respirator in less than a week. Party of European Socialists: The group's COVID-19 webpage leads with the mobilisation of business sectors by the president of La Rioja – Concha Andreu (ES) – to produce material for health-care professionals (with 3D printing proving its life-saving potential), while Johanna Rolland (FR), Mayor of Nantes, highlights the food aid Nantes is offering with the support of NGOs. In Vienna, Peter Florianschütz (AT) and his colleagues have focused hard on communicating, including through animated videos for children and messages in the languages of the biggest minority groups, while Alison Gilliland (IE) gives prominence to Dublin's outreach to the elderly. Renew Europe: The group's dedicated webpage has a country-by-country breakdown of actions by its members and their local authorities, coupled with details of local lockdowns. All mayors in Istria have pooled resources to buy medical equipment and agree on collective measures to protect local businesses, writes Valter Drandić (HR), president of Istria's Regional Assembly. Initiatives by the mayor of Trbovlje, Jasna Gabrič (SI), include free accommodation for health-workers and one-to-one care by volunteers for their children, while municipal services in Autun, whose mayor is Vincent Chauvet (FR), are helping local businesses find and deliver to customers. European Conservatives and Reformists: The group has set examples of what its members are doing in the context of national measures, and includes calls by CoR members for action at the EU level. Examples include the packages of measures steered through by regional presidents in the group, including from Veneto (Luca Zaia) and Abruzzo (Marco Marsilio) in Italy and, in Poland, from Podkarpackie (Wladysław Ortyl) and Małopolska (Witold Kozlowski). The group's COVID-19 webpage is here, with examples collected here.

European Alliance: Kieran McCarthy (IE), President of the European Alliance group in the CoR, has issued a call for the EU to defend local democracy, stating: "Any decision to limit the powers of elected mayors cannot be accepted and is contrary to the values upon which the EU is based." The group also released a statement by Nanette Maupertuis (FR), in which the member of the executive council of Corsica Regional Authority praised European Commission proposals to support regions hit by coronavirus. The European Alliance has consolidated its Members' experience on this page.

Greens: The position of the European Greens on the crisis and what is needed now can be found on the group's website.
