Future of Europe: A case for plurilingualism & cultural cooperation in cross-border regions

Language barriers still represent a major obstacle along European internal and external borders while, at the same time, border regions offer very particular conditions for learning neighbouring languages as the geographical proximity allows learners to easily get in touch with native speakers and the neighbouring country’s culture.

During the first part of the workshop, our speakers will present best practice projects that are promoting plurilingualism in border regions, and which are transferrable to other European regions. They will not focus on systemic projects and reforms from school authorities, but on smaller projects initiated by euro districts and EGTCs, which are important actors in cross-border cooperation. One of the presented projects will be the French-German online game “Weltenbummler – Passe-Partout”, that adopts a playful method in order to motivate children to take the step across the border and discover the entire cross-border region in the virtual game as well as in real life.

The second part of the workshop will focus on cross-border and transnational cooperation on cultural heritage, as an important step towards unification of our continent. Jean Monnet, one of the founding fathers of the European Union, once said "If it has to be redone, I would start with the culture" when referring to the creation of the European Union, which was his way of acknowledging the importance of culture for the integration of Europe. In this part of the workshop, we will look into examples from EGTC Amphictony and hear more about other interesting examples of cooperation from the European Commission.
