Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Président du Comité européen des régions 

Vasco Alves Cordeiro a été élu président du Comité européen des régions en juin 2022.

Né le 28 mars 1973 aux Açores, région autonome du Portugal et région ultrapériphérique de l’Union européenne, Vasco Alves Cordeiro, avocat, marié et père de deux enfants, est membre de l’Assemblée législative de la région autonome des Açores.

Diplômé en droit de l’université de Coimbra et titulaire d’un diplôme de troisième cycle en droit régional de l’université de Lisbonne et de l’université des Açores, Vasco Alves Cordeiro a commencé sa carrière professionnelle d’avocat aux Açores en 1995, où il a exercé jusqu’en 2003.

En 1996, il a été élu pour la première fois député du parti socialiste à l’Assemblée législative de la région autonome des Açores, où il a dirigé le groupe socialiste entre 2000 et 2003.

Il a depuis lors occupé plusieurs postes au sein de l’exécutif régional, dont celui de secrétaire régional à l’économie (2008-2012), secrétaire régional de la présidence (2004-2008), chargé des affaires européennes et extérieures, et secrétaire régional à l’agriculture et à la pêche (2003-2004).

En 2012, il a été élu pour la première fois président du gouvernement régional des Açores, fonction à laquelle il a été réélu en 2016 et, à ce titre, il a représenté sa région aux niveaux européen et international en qualité de membre du Comité européen des régions, ainsi que d’organisations telles que la Conférence des régions périphériques et maritimes d’Europe, la Conférence des présidents des régions ultrapériphériques de l’UE, l’Assemblée des régions d’Europe, le réseau «R20 Regions of Climate Action» (les régions engagées en faveur du climat), et dans le cadre des relations avec les pays accueillant des communautés originaires des Açores, comme les États-Unis, le Canada et le Brésil. De 2014 à 2020, il a présidé la Conférence des régions périphériques maritimes d’Europe.

Il préside également le parti socialiste des Açores depuis janvier 2013. Parfaitement convaincu qu’il est urgent de s’attaquer au problème de l’adhésion des citoyens au projet européen, Vasco Alves Cordeiro s’est également engagé à renforcer la cohésion sociale, économique et territoriale au sein de l’Union européenne, plaidant en faveur de politiques européennes qui correspondent véritablement aux intérêts et aux ambitions des citoyens et qui renforcent le rôle des régions, bastions de la démocratie interne de l’Union et de son progrès économique et social.

Membre titulaire du Comité européen des régions depuis 2013 après avoir été suppléant de 2004 à 2008, M. Cordeiro en a été le premier vice-président de février 2020 à juin 2022.
