Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Euroopan alueiden komitean puheenjohtaja 

Vasco Alves Cordeiro valittiin Euroopan alueiden komitean puheenjohtajaksi kesäkuussa 2022.

EU:n syrjäisimpiin alueisiin kuuluvalla Azorien autonomisella alueella (Portugali) 28. maaliskuuta 1973 syntynyt Vasco Alves Cordeiro, asianajaja, naimisissa ja kahden lapsen isä, on Azorien autonomisen alueen valtuuston jäsen.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro, joka on suorittanut oikeustieteen loppututkinnon Coimbran yliopistossa ja jolla on jatkotutkinto aluelainsäädännössä Lissabonin yliopistosta ja Azorien yliopistosta, aloitti työuransa asianajajana vuonna 1995 Azoreilla, missä hän harjoitti ammattiaan vuoteen 2003.

Vuonna 1996 hänet valittiin ensimmäisen kerran Azorien aluevaltuuston jäseneksi sosialistipuolueen edustajana, ja vuosina 2000–2003 hän toimi aluevaltuustossa sosialistipuolueen ryhmänjohtajana.

Sen jälkeen hän on hoitanut useita tehtäviä aluehallituksessa: muun muassa talousasioista vastaavana aluehallituksen jäsenenä (2008–2012), aluehallituksen puheenjohtajiston aluesihteerinä (2004–2008), EU- ja ulkoasiavastaavana sekä maataloudesta ja kalastuksesta vastaavana aluehallituksen jäsenenä (2003–2004).

Vuonna 2012 hänet valittiin ensimmäisen kerran Azorien aluehallituksen puheenjohtajaksi – tehtävä, johon hänet valittiin uudelleen vuonna 2016, ja tässä ominaisuudessa hän edusti aluetta eurooppalaisella ja kansainvälisellä tasolla Euroopan alueiden komitean jäsenenä ja järjestöissä, joista mainittakoon muun muassa Euroopan perifeeristen merellisten alueiden liitto, EU:n syrjäisimpien alueiden johtajien kokous (Conference of Presidents of the EU Outermost Regions), Euroopan alueiden liitto ja R20-järjestö (Regions of Climate Action), sekä suhteissa maihin, joilla asuu azorilaisyhteisöjä, kuten Yhdysvaltoihin, Kanadaan ja Brasiliaan. Vuosina 2014–2020 hän toimi Euroopan perifeeristen merellisten alueiden liiton puheenjohtajana.

Cordeiro on toiminut Azorien sosialistipuolueen puheenjohtajana tammikuusta 2013 lähtien. Vasco Alves Cordeiro kannattaa vahvasti ajatusta siitä, että on tartuttava kiireesti ongelmaan, joka liittyy kansalaisten tuen saamiseen Euroopan yhdentymishankkeelle. Hän on myös omistautunut vahvistamaan sosiaalista, taloudellista ja alueellista yhteenkuuluvuutta Euroopan unionissa ja ajanut sellaisia unionin toimintapolitiikkoja, jotka ovat aidosti kansalaisten etujen ja tavoitteiden mukaisia ja vahvistavat alueiden roolia unionin sisäisen demokratian sekä taloudellisen ja sosiaalisen edistyksen tukipilareina.

Cordeiro, joka on Euroopan alueiden komitean jäsen vuodesta 2013 ja joka oli sitä ennen varajäsen vuosina 2004–2008, toimi komitean ensimmäisenä varapuheenjohtajana helmikuusta 2020 kesäkuuhun 2022.
