Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Euroopa Regioonide Komitee president 

Vasco Alves Cordeiro valiti Euroopa Regioonide Komitee presidendiks 2022. aasta juunis.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro sündis 28. märtsil 1973 Assooridel, Portugali autonoomses piirkonnas, mis on ka üks ELi äärepoolseim piirkond. Ta on hariduselt jurist, abielus ja kahe lapse isa ning Assooride autonoomse piirkonna parlamendi liige.

Pärast õigusteaduse bakalaureusekraadi omandamist Coimbra ülikoolis ning magistrikraadi omandamist regionaalõiguse alal Lissaboni ülikoolis ja Assooride ülikoolis, alustas Vasco Alves Cordeiro oma erialast karjääri juristina Assooridel 1995. aastal, tegutsedes sellel ametikohal kuni 2003. aastani.

1996. aastal valiti ta esimest korda Assooride autonoomse piirkonna parlamenti Sotsialistliku Partei liikmena ning ta juhtis aastatel 2000–2003 parlamendi sotsialistide fraktsiooni.

Seejärel töötas ta autonoomse piirkonna valitsuses mitmel ametikohal, sealhulgas valitsuse liikmena majanduse (2008–2012), Euroopa ja välisasjade (2004–2008) ning põllumajanduse ja kalanduse valdkonnas (2003–2004).

2012. aastal valiti ta esimest korda Assooride autonoomse piirkonna valitsuse juhiks ning sellele ametikohale valiti ta 2016. aastal tagasi. Valitsuse juhina esindas ta oma piirkonda Euroopa ja rahvusvahelisel tasandil Euroopa Regioonide Komitee liikmena ning ka selliste organisatsioonide liikmena nagu Euroopa Mereliste Äärealade Konverents, ELi äärepoolseimate piirkondade juhtide konverents, Euroopa Piirkondade Assamblee, R20 – kliimameetmeid pooldavad piirkonnad, kuid ka suhetes riikidega, kus leidub Assooridelt pärit kogukondi, sealhulgas USA, Kanada ja Brasiilia. Aastatel 2014–2020 oli ta Euroopa Mereliste Äärealade Konverentsi esimees.

Ta on 2013. aasta jaanuarist peale olnud Assooride Sotsialistliku Partei esimees. Vasco Alves Cordeiro toetab jõuliselt pakilist vajadust tegeleda kodanike toetuse küsimusega Euroopa projektile ning ta on samuti pühendunud Euroopa Liidu sotsiaalse, majandusliku ja territoriaalse ühtekuuluvuse tugevdamisele, sellise Euroopa poliitika toetamisele, mis tõeliselt vastab kodanike huvidele ja püüdlustele, ning piirkondade rolli tugevdamisele liidu sisedemokraatia ning majandusliku ja sotsiaalse arengu alustalana.

Euroopa Regioonide Komitee liige on ta olnud 2013. aastast alates ning enne seda oli ta aastatel 2004–2008 komitee asendusliige. Vasco Alves Cordeiro oli 2020. aasta veebruarist kuni 2022. aasta juunini komitee esimene asepresident.
