21 December 2022 - "An Hour for Ukraine" - CoR and EESC Stand in Solidarity with Ukraine this Christmas

The European Alliance of Cities and Regions for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) are taking part in this solidarity initiative by turning off the lights of the EESC-CoR buildings today 21 December between 20:00 – 21:00. We invite all regions and cities to switch off their festive lights tonight at 8 pm local time and join "The Hour for Ukraine".

The 21st  of December is the darkest day of the year. But darkness for Ukraine began in mid-October, as Russia bombed and shelled the country’s civilian energy infrastructure. Over 10 million people will have to go through winter with no electricity, heat, and water, while temperatures are expected to plummet to –20C degrees.

At the start of the war, people across the world expressed their sympathy and stood in solidarity with Ukraine. Over time, the narrative has shifted and news coverage of the war has primarily focused on military and political strategy. There is a lack of public awareness of the scale of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

This Christmas, turn off your festive lights for an hour and share a moment of reflection with the people of Ukraine.
