Conference on "Sustainability and Competition Policy: Bridging two Worlds to Enable a Fairer Economy"

The European Committee of the Regions, the European Economic and Social Committee, the Fair Trade Advocacy Office, the Global Competition Law Centre of the College of Europe and the Center for Economics, Law and Society at University College of London, with the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development have the pleasure to invite you to a conference on

“Sustainability and Competition Policy:
Bridging two Worlds to Enable a Fairer Economy”
on Thursday 24 October 2019, CoR/EESC, Rue Belliard 99-101, Brussels, Room JDE 62

The Conference will inquire into the connection between competition law and sustainability, in line with an overall examination of how to align EU policies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to fight against increasing social disparities and improve the wellbeing of people while remaining within the environment limits of the planet.

In particular, the conference will explore how competition policy can give weight to sustainability values, and avoid acting as a barrier to industry initiatives intended to deliver sustainability objectives. Sectoral examples will illustrate how cooperation on sustainable initiatives in the supply chains – such as combatting child labour and promoting education, or investing in climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural practices – may be affected by certain competition law provisions.

Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager will deliver the keynote address, which will be followed by a debate revisiting the current controversies around the consumer welfare standard. The conference will then offer perspectives of industry players and several competition agencies globally as to the means of accommodating sustainability goals within an antitrust framework. It will then endeavor to discuss ways to overcome disciplinary boundaries in order to enable the emergence of sustainability-enhancing outcomes.

More than simply presenting challenges, this conference will aim to sketch possible pathways allowing economic agents to move to the stage of implementing sustainability objectives.

Interpretation will be provided in EN/DE/FR. Webstreaming will be provided too during the conference.

The registrations are closed but if you wish you may still register on our waiting list.
