Summer Camps for Ukrainian children

Summer Camps for Ukrainian children is a joint flagship initiative of the European Committee of the Regions and the Association of Ukrainian Cities and was launched in 2022. The initiative welcomes Ukrainian children to cities and regions across Europe and provides them with a safe place to enjoy cultural, sports, educational and recreational activities. It makes a difference by giving them a break from the brutal reality of war. Summer holiday projects also help Ukrainian children and young people: they have the chance to feel that Europe is their home and a place where they can be safe, build a community and feel supported.

Summer Camps initiative: 2024

The European Committee of the Regions, along with EU cities and regions and in cooperation with the Association of Ukrainian Cities, is committed to keeping up the summer camps initiative in 2024.

Building on the experience of previous years, the European Committee of the Regions and the Association of Ukrainian Cities have prepared support materials (see the documents section below), which contain practical tips outlining the steps that local and regional authorities are advised to follow when organising a summer holiday project for Ukrainian children.

The European Committee of the Regions and the Association of Ukrainian Cities will be holding an online informative session on how to organise summer camps on 24 April from 10:30 to 12:00 CET. This session will bring together local and regional authorities that have already hosted Ukrainian children and are keen to share their experience and practical insights on how to get started and run a successful summer camps project. The session will be held in English.

Summer Camps initiative: 2022 and 2023

As a result of the efforts of the European Committee of the Regions, its members and the Association of Ukrainian Cities, over 1250 children were welcomed to various cities and regions of the European Union in 2022, the initiative's first year of operation.

The summer camps initiative was twice as successful in 2023, with more than 3000 Ukrainian children hosted by communities across Europe (in 50 cities and regions from 16 Member States). The video clip in the multimedia section below provides an overview of the initiative in 2023.
