Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Presidente del Comité Europeo de las Regiones 

Vasco Alves Cordeiro fue elegido presidente del Comité Europeo de las Regiones en junio de 2022.

Nacido el 28 de marzo de 1973 en las Islas Azores —región autónoma de Portugal y región ultraperiférica de la Unión Europea—, Vasco Alves Cordeiro, abogado, casado y padre de dos hijos, es miembro de la Asamblea Legislativa de la Región Autónoma de las Azores.

Licenciado en Derecho por la Universidad de Coímbra y con un posgrado en Derecho regional de la Universidad de Lisboa y la Universidad de las Azores, Vasco Alves Cordeiro comenzó su andadura profesional como abogado en las Azores en 1995, donde ejerció hasta 2003.

En 1996, fue elegido por vez primera miembro de la Asamblea Legislativa de la Región Autónoma de las Azores por el Partido Socialista, cuyo grupo lideró entre 2000 y 2003.

Desde entonces, ha ostentado varios cargos en el Gobierno regional: secretario regional de Economía (2008-2012), secretario regional de la Presidencia (2004-2008), responsable de Asuntos Europeos y Exteriores, y secretario regional de Agricultura y Pesca (2003-2004).

En 2012, fue elegido por vez primera presidente del Gobierno Regional de las Azores, cargo para el que fue reelegido en 2016. En el ejercicio de sus funciones ha representado a su región a escala europea e internacional en calidad de miembro del Comité Europeo de las Regiones, y de organizaciones como la Conferencia de Regiones Periféricas Marítimas de Europa, la Conferencia de Presidentes de las Regiones Ultraperiféricas de la Unión Europea, la Asamblea de las Regiones de Europa o la red R20 – Regions of Climate Action, así como en el marco de relaciones con países, como Estados Unidos, Canadá y Brasil, que acogen comunidades originarias de las Azores. De 2014 a 2020, fue presidente de la Conferencia de Regiones Periféricas Marítimas de Europa.

Ha lidera también el Partido Socialista de las Azores desde enero de 2013. Totalmente convencido de la necesidad de abordar con urgencia la cuestión del apoyo de la ciudadanía al proyecto europeo, Vasco Alves Cordeiro también se ha comprometido a reforzar la cohesión social, económica y territorial en la Unión Europea y ha abogado por políticas europeas que atiendan efectivamente a los intereses y las ambiciones de la ciudadanía y que consoliden el papel de las regiones como bastiones de la democracia interna de la Unión y su progreso económico y social.

Miembro titular del Comité Europeo de las Regiones desde 2013, tras haber sido miembro suplente de 2004 a 2008, Vasco Alves Cordeiro ha sido vicepresidente primero de la institución entre febrero de 2020 y junio de 2022.
