ARLEM at the 5th UfM Ministerial Conference on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society

On 26 October 2022, ARLEM vice-president Arianna Censi, member of the Milan Municipal Council (Italy), addressed the Union for the Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society, which took place in Madrid, under the Co-Presidency of the European Union, represented by Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Gender Equality, and Jordan, represented by Ayman Riad Al-Mufleh, Minister of Social Development of Jordan. The host was Irene Montero, Minister of Gender Equality of Spain.

The Ministerial Declaration adopted during the Ministerial Conference focuses on strengthening women's economic empowerment and on ending violence against women and girls in the Euro-Mediterranean region. In it, the role of local and regional authorities has been recognised as a catalyst for change towards greater gender equality and women's empowerment.

Arianna Censi, ARLEM ambassador for gender issues, highlighted that ARLEM strives to promote women's empowerment and gender equality, in terms of both rights and opportunities, as an essential asset for fostering regional stability and socio-economic development. The obstacles to women's active participation in politics should be addressed, and any legal barriers to women's political participation in election processes should be eliminated in order to encourage more stable, prosperous and inclusive societies.

ARLEM has been working on the issue of women's empowerment for many years and in 2018 adopted a Report on women's empowerment in the Mediterranean region.
