On 6 February, local and regional politicians from all over the EU will welcome Vasilica Viorica Dăncilă, Prime Minister of Romania and representative of the Romanian EU Presidency, at the European Committee of the Regions' (CoR) plenary session. The priorities of the EU Presidency, preservation of cohesion as a common European value, and the EU's future after Brexit will be among the main topics for debate.

The plenary will start with a commemoration of Paweł Adamowicz, Mayor of Gdansk and CoR member murdered on 13 January. In this regard, a resolution on "Combatting Hate Speech" will be presented and is expected to be adopted by the CoR's members.

6 February, 15:15: Debate on the future EU programmes for education, culture, youth and sport

For the next long-term EU budget 2021-2027, the European Commission is proposing to double funding for Erasmus to €30 billion. The CoR draft opinion prepared by Ulrike Hiller (DE/PES), Member of the Bremen Senate, calls for more measures to improve the inclusiveness of the programme. Following a debate with Tibor Navracsics, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, the political assembly will also adopt its recommendations for the Creative Europe programme led by rapporteur János Ádam Karácsony (HU/EPP), councillor of Tahitótfalu village.

6 February, 17:00: Priorities of the Romanian EU Presidency and the future of Europe

In January, Romania took over the rotating EU Presidency for the first time since it joined the EU. Romania's Prime Minister Dăncilă will set out the Presidency's priorities over the six months, a time when important decisions - such as the UK is expected to exit from the EU in March, the European elections in May and negotiations on the EU Long Term Budget post-2020 – will shape the future of the EU.

This debate comes just a few weeks ahead of the 8th European Summit of Regions and Cities that will be held in Bucharest on 14-15 March 2019. The event is co-organised by the CoR, the Romanian EU Presidency and the Associations of local and regional authorities of Romania. Under the title "(Re) New EUrope" the Summit will gather over 500 European, national, regional and local leaders from all EU Member States to discuss the contribution of local and regional governments to the future of Europe.
