CoR / CORLEAP representatives at the Meeting of ministers of foreign affairs of the Eastern Partnership

Chaired by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Josep Borrell Fontelles, the Meeting of ministers of foreign affairs of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) was held on 12 December 2022 in Brussels, at the Council of the EU premises. Commissioner for Enlargement and neighbourhood policy Olivér Várhelyi made the opening speech. Ministers of foreign affairs or their deputies of all 27 EU Member States and the five participating Eastern partner countries (Ukraine, Republic of Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan) took part.

Co-Chair of the Conference of Regional and Local Authorities for the Eastern Partnership (CORLEAP) Co-Chair Zurab Abashidze, Deputy Chair of Tbilisi City Assembly, Georgia, and Alin-Adrin Nica (RO/EPP), the CoR rapporteur on the Future of EaP represented the CoR and CORLEAP. They informed of the conclusions of the recent 11th CORLEAP Annual meeting in Liberec, Czech Republic, and gave outline of the draft opinion.

According to the meetings conclusions formulated by the HR/VP Borrell, EaP is to continue its work, (and therefore CORLEAP) is to continue the work, becoming more flexible, with activities tailor-made to accommodate needs and aspirations of each participant. Security cooperation is moving towards the top of the agenda (not only regarding Ukraine); areas: countering cyber and hybrid threats, energy security. Ways should be found how to involve partners from the Western Balkans and Central Asia in EaP cooperation, including by a possible invitation to some of them to the next such meeting.
