16th ECON Commission Meeting and Conference on Arctic Smartness  

 

The ECON commission held its 16th meeting and a conference on "Arctic Smartness" in Rovaniemi, Finland, on 9 and 10 November 2017.

The ECON meeting took place on 9 November and included the discussion and adoption of two draft opinions. The first was the opinion on the "Reflection paper on the deepening of the Economic and Monetary Union by 2025", for which the rapporteur is Christophe ROUILLON (FR/PES). Before the end of the meeting, Mr Pavel BRANDA (CZ/ECR), Member of the CoR and rapporteur for the opinion "People-to-people projects in cross-border cooperation programmes" presented the CoR's European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) Platform as well as concrete examples of achievements possible through this type of cooperation.

On 10 November, ECON members took part in a conference on "Arctic Smartness: Supporting emerging industries for regional growth" in the morning. This conference explored how best to support emerging industries to foster regional economic growth, including through the development of Smart Specialisation Strategies. It featured speakers from Finnish regional and national government, European institutions and regional authorities across Europe, as well as think tanks and businesses. In the afternoon, ECON members took part in different study visits around the theme of "putting Arctic Smartness into practice".
