Online Stakeholder Consultation on the Progress of the Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should be implemented by 2030. However, the last two years with the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and growing geopolitical tension correspond to a reversal of progress in SDGs implementation throughout the world and in the EU.

Next year will mark the midpoint in the implementation of SDGs. The EU will present its EU Voluntary Review at the HLPF in July and Heads of State and Government will take stock of progress made worldwide at the UN SDGs summit in September.

The CoR together with the OECD has teamed up to highlight the key contribution of regions and cities to SDGs for recovery. For instance the latest OECD report highlights that many regions and cities consider SDGs as a suitable framework for recovery post-covid. Other organisations such as the CEMR/UCLG are gathering contributions from their members and supporting them to localise SDGs. These efforts to implement SDGs should be integrated within VNRs and in the EU VR to highlight the full extent of the European effort on SDGs.

SDGs should also be fully part of the EU recovery effort.

Such an exercise is an opportunity to foster better governance and better policy-making with interactions of all levels of governments.

In this framework, the CoR has re-appointed Ricardo Rio, Mayor of Braga, Portugal, as rapporteur for an Opinion on the progress in the implementation of SDGs.

The Opinion is the occasion to engage in an inter-institutional dialogue with EU decision makers ahead of the UN Summit and SDGs review. Mr Rio has also been invited by the Czech Presidency of the Council to a Working Party meeting in November to contribute to the EU VR.

Before drafting the Opinion, the rapporteur would like to gather your views and feedback on progress on SDGs in your cities/regions and country.

Therefore, the CoR will host a stakeholders consultation on Tuesday 4 October from 10.30 until 12.00.
