Vasco Alves Cordeiro

Born in the Azores on 28 March 1973, Vasco Alves Cordeiro, a lawyer, married with two children, is the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, an Autonomous Region of Portugal and an EU outermost Region.

Prior to his first election as President of the Regional Government of the Azores, in 2012, he held several cabinet positions as Regional Secretary for the Economy (2008-2012), the Presidency (2004-2008), responsible for European and External Affairs, and Agriculture and Fisheries (2003-2004). In October 2016 he was re-elected President of the Regional Government of the Azores.

In 1996, Vasco Cordeiro was first elected as a member of the Parliament of the Azores Autonomous Region and, between 2000 and 2003, after being re-elected, held the office of leader of the Socialist Party in the regional Parliament.

In the performance of his duties, Mr Cordeiro has represented the Azores at European and international level as a member of organisations such as the European Committee of the Regions, the Assembly of European Regions or “R20 - Regions of Climate Action".

He was first elected president of the Conference of Maritime and Peripheral Regions of Europe in 2014, in Sweden, then reelected in 2016, in Ponta Delgada, and again in 2018, in Funchal.

A dedicated advocate of urgent attention to the issue of the citizen's connection to the European project, he has also focused on strengthening social, economic and territorial cohesion in the European Union and advocated for European policies that effectively serve citizens' interests and ambitions, strengthening the role of regions as strongholds of the Union's internal democracy.
