Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Präsident des Europäischen Ausschusses der Regionen 

Vasco Alves Cordeiro wurde im Juni 2022 zum Präsidenten des Europäischen Ausschusses der Regionen gewählt.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro wurde am 28. März 1973 auf den Azoren geboren, einer autonomen Region Portugals, die zugleich eine EU-Region in äußerster Randlage ist. Der Rechtsanwalt ist verheiratet und hat zwei Kinder. Er ist Mitglied der gesetzgebenden Versammlung der Autonomen Region Azoren.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro hat ein Studium der Rechtswissenschaften an der Universität Coimbra und ein Postgraduiertenstudium in Regionalrecht an der Universität Lissabon und der Universität der Azoren absolviert. 1995 begann er seine berufliche Laufbahn als Rechtsanwalt auf den Azoren, wo er bis 2003 tätig war.

1996 wurde er erstmals für die Partido Socialista (PS) in die gesetzgebende Versammlung der Autonomen Region Azoren gewählt und war zwischen 2000 und 2003 Fraktionsvorsitzender der PS im Regionalparlament.

Seitdem hat er verschiedene Ämter in der Regionalregierung bekleidet, u. a. war er als Regionalminister für Wirtschaft (2008–2012), für europäische und auswärtige Angelegenheiten (2004–2008) sowie für Landwirtschaft und Fischerei (2003–2004) zuständig.

2012 wurde er zum ersten Mal zum Präsidenten der Regionalregierung der Azoren gewählt und 2016 wiedergewählt. In dieser Funktion vertrat er die Region auf europäischer und internationaler Ebene als Mitglied des Europäischen Ausschusses der Regionen sowie in Organisationen wie der Konferenz der peripheren Küstenregionen Europas (KPKR), der Konferenz der Präsidenten der Regionen in äußerster Randlage der EU, der Versammlung der Regionen Europas (VRE), den „R20 – Regions of Climate Action“ sowie im Rahmen der Beziehungen zu den Ländern der azorischen Diaspora (u. a. USA, Kanada und Brasilien). Von 2014 bis 2020 war er Präsident der Konferenz der peripheren Küstenregionen Europas (KPKR).

Seit Januar 2013 ist Cordeiro Vorsitzender der Partido Socialista der Azoren. Vasco Alves Cordeiro, der sich nachdrücklich dafür einsetzt, die Unterstützung der Bürgerinnen und Bürger für das Projekt Europa zu gewinnen, hat sich auch der Stärkung des sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und territorialen Zusammenhalts in der Europäischen Union verschrieben und ist Befürworter einer europäischen Politik, die den Interessen und Belangen der Bürgerinnen und Bürger wirklich entspricht und in deren Rahmen die Rolle der Regionen als Garanten der Demokratie innerhalb der Union sowie ihr wirtschaftlicher und sozialer Fortschritt gestärkt werden.

Seit 2013 ist er Mitglied des Europäischen Ausschusses der Regionen, davor war er von 2004 bis 2008 stellvertretendes Mitglied. Von Februar 2020 bis Juni 2022 war Cordeiro Erster Vizepräsident des AdR.
