Europe Day 2021 – The future is in your hands

On the occasion of the launch of the Conference on the Future of Europe on 9 May in Strasbourg, the European Committee of the Regions organised a debate (11:00-13:00) which gave the floor to local and regional elected representatives and European citizens. The aim of the debate was to “territorialise” the Conference, and to reflect together on the role that local and regional authorities should play in the Europe of tomorrow.

The debate was organised jointly with the French government, the City and Eurometropolis of Strasbourg, the Regions of France, the Assemblée des Départements de France and the Association des Maires de France. We discussed how to build the House of European Democracy, in the context of the Conference.

Session 1: 11:00-12:00
Engaging in local dialogue with citizens for a more resilient Europe

Session 2: 12:00-13:00
Strengthening democratic legitimacy: a Conference for and with citizens – the contribution of the European Committee of the Regions

A report about the event is available here.

Europe Day takes place each year on 9 May and celebrates peace and unity in Europe, recognising the EU's achievements and looking to the future. It marks the anniversary of the 'Schuman declaration', the beginning of what is now the European Union.

For Europe Day this year, the European Committee of the Regions opened its 'virtual' doors so that citizens across Member States and beyond could find out more about the EU institution representing the voice of regions and cities in the European Union.

Citizens joined us online and took part in Europe Day from wherever they were:
