Young people entrusted with the responsibilities of elected office in Europe's cities and regions deserve a voice in the policy making process as key players in building European democracy

The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) has launched its 2023 Young Elected Politicians (YEP) programme, bringing together 150 local and regional politicians from around the EU and, for the first time, from all EU candidate countries.

Over the next 12 months, the 2023 YEP cohort will make their voices heard by actively participating in the CoR's political and consultative work. By taking part in our events, consultations and Plenary sessions, the YEPs will have the opportunity to bring the youth perspective to debates and to reinforce the CoR's work in shaping European policies and decisions with their expertise and ambition and new perspective.

Since its launch at the 8th European Summit of Regions and Cities in 2019, the YEP Programme has been an integral part of the Committee's commitment to meaningful youth participation, enabling young representatives to become the champions of the European project by bringing diverse views from Europe's regions and cities to the decision-making table. The conclusions of the Conference on the Future of Europe and the European Charter on Youth and Democracy, adopted in December 2022, underline the importance and necessity of further involving the youth in the political process.

What is the YEP programme?

The Young Elected Politicians programme (YEPs) is a network of representatives who are no older than 40 and hold a mandate at regional or local level in the EU. To date, more than 500 young politicians have participated since its creation in 2019. Since its launch, the YEP Programme has been growing both in both size and scope, and this year is no different. For the first time since its launch, the YEP programme has been opened to all EU candidate countries, allowing young generations of local and regional representatives from Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Türkiye to engage further in the Union's democratic life and pave the way towards EU membership.

The YEP programme offers the opportunity to build a network with other local and regional representatives, exchange best practices, obtain information on EU legislation and funding opportunities, contribute to the work of the Committee of the Regions, and to meet, discuss and debate with CoR members and other local, regional and European representatives.

Selected YEPs have access to:

  • CoR activities and events, including plenary sessions;
  • Seminars, events and consultations upon invitation;
  • Online networking opportunities with members of the YEP community;
  • Training sessions on EU topics.

In addition, selected YEPs will have the opportunity to participate in various communication activities related to the programme, showcasing their work and their regions.
