Zero Pollution Stakeholder Platform – High-Level Launch Meeting  

On 16th December 2021, the Committee of the Regions (CoR), in cooperation with the European Commission, has organized the high-level launch meeting of the Zero Pollution Stakeholder Platform.

The CoR co-chairs the Platform together with the European Commission.

Marieke Schouten (NL/Greens), CoR Rapporteur for the opinion on EU Action Plan: 'Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil is Co-chair.

Markku Markkula (FI/EPP), Member of the Green Deal Going Local Working Group and former CoR President is Vice Co-chair.

This first meeting of the platform has been co-chaired by Marieke Schouten for the CoR and by Patrick Child, Deputy Director General of DG Environment for the European Commission. High-level interventions:

  • Apostolos Tzitzikostas, President of the European Committee of the Regions.
  • Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries.
  • Sarah Nelen, Deputy Head of Cabinet of Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans at European Commission.

Background:

The European Commission, in cooperation with the European Committee of the Regions, set up Zero Pollution Stakeholder Platform to help achieve the EU's zero pollution ambition as set out in the European Green Deal to reduce air, water and soil pollution to levels that are no longer considered harmful to health and natural ecosystem.

This first meeting of the platform has been the occasion for the members of the Zero Pollution Stakeholder Platform to discuss the expectations and suggestions for work priorities of the Stakeholder Platform in 2022 and beyond. This will feed into the preparation of the work programme which will be approved at the second meeting.
