Migrant access to healthcare: From emergency responses to sustainable solutions

Conference organised by the European Committee of the Regions, the European Commission (DG HOME) and the Council of Europe Development Bank under the Urban Agenda Partnership for Migrants and Refugees.

On 18 and 19 October 2022, the European Committee of the Regions, Council of Europe Development Bank and the European Commission organised a conference on Migrant access to healthcare:

From emergency responses to sustainable solutions, elaborated in the framework of the Urban Agenda Partnership for Migrants and Refugees. The conference brought together EU policy makers, members of the European Committee of the Regions, representatives of local and regional authorities, members of the Cities and Regions for Integration of Migrants network of the European Committee of the Regions, the civil society and experts from the field from across the EU to share experiences and good practices on how to improve the access to healthcare and mental health support for migrants and refugees.

The 2-day conference focused on Improving migrants' and refugees' access to healthcare and on the Challenges in upholding migrants' and refugees' mental health with the objective of exploring the existing, evidence-based innovative approaches to minimising barriers to health care, with a focus on those applied in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and in the context of the arrival of many displaced people from Ukraine. In particular, the event also looked at ways of improving healthcare rights, creating culturally sensitive, patient-centred health care systems, and improving migrant health literacy. Participants identified best practices and potential solutions, and discussed how the current challenges can be addressed through multilevel governance, including through better knowledge-sharing, funding, and regulatory changes at EU level.

The conference was hosted by the European Committee of the Regions and received support from the Council of Europe Development Bank's Migrant and Refugee Fund.
