COMMIT, ENGAGE, ACT and NETWORK on the road to Glasgow
Since 2008, over 10,000 local governments have been acting as part of the European Covenant of Mayors movement to reduce their GHG emissions, adapt to climate change, secure access to affordable and sustainable energy, and, overall, to improve the quality of life for their citizens.
In April 2021, the Covenant of Mayors has entered a new phase, officially launching its renewed ambition of a fairer and climate-neutral Europe.
With this renewed ambition, signatories commit to reaching climate neutrality by 2050, to increasing their emission reduction targets, implementing adaptation to climate change measures and alleviating energy thanks to a just transition. They also commit to engaging their citizens, businesses and local stakeholders in the transition, thus contributing to the European Climate Pact.
April 2021 also marks a key milestone for the partnership between the Covenant of Mayors and the European Committee of the Regions (CoR): the new Chamber of National Ambassadors composed of 27 CoR members (one per Member State) acting as National Ambassadors of the Covenant-Europe Initiative.
The members of the chamber work to ensure national representation in terms of its governance. They will work to foster more tailored feedback, as well as supporting the promotion of the initiative at national level.:
The Chamber of National Ambassadors will add its efforts to the European Covenant's Political Board, where CoR member Mr. Trzaskowski has sat since December 2020.
The Covenant of Mayors are inviting all cities, regions, and all members of the Covenant of Mayors Community in Europe to get together in the online ceremony to be held on 7 October 2021, from 09:30 to 13:00.
We will celebrate the shared 2050 ambition, achievements as part of the Covenant Community, and discuss how to commit, engage and act towards a fairer, climate-neutral Europe. Register here!
