Vasco Alves Cordeiro 

Předseda Evropského výboru regionů 

Vasco Alves Cordeiro byl zvolen předsedou Evropského výboru regionů v červnu roku 2022.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro se narodil dne 28. března 1973 na Azorských ostrovech, které jsou jednou z autonomních oblastí Portugalska a patří do skupiny nejvzdálenějších regionů EU. Je právník, je ženatý a má dvě děti. Vykonává funkci poslance zákonodárného shromáždění portugalské autonomní oblasti Azory.

Poté, co vystudoval práva na Univerzitě v Coimbře a získal postgraduální titul v oboru regionálního práva na Lisabonské univerzitě a na Univerzitě Azorských ostrovů, zahájil v roce 1995 svou profesní dráhu právníka na Azorských ostrovech, které se zde věnoval až do roku 2003.

V roce 1996 byl poprvé zvolen poslancem zákonodárného shromáždění autonomní oblasti Azory za socialistickou stranu, v letech 2000 až 2003 byl v rámci tohoto regionálního parlamentu šéfem poslaneckého klubu této strany.

Od té doby zastával různé funkce v regionální vládě, mimo jiné funkci regionálního ministra hospodářství (2008–2012), regionálního ministra pro předsednictví (2004–2008) odpovědného za evropské a vnější záležitosti a regionálního ministra pro zemědělství a rybolov (2003–2004).

V roce 2012 byl poprvé zvolen předsedou vlády autonomní oblasti Azory, jímž se opětovně stal v roce 2016. Při výkonu této funkce zastupoval Azorské ostrovy na evropské i mezinárodní úrovni jakožto člen Evropského výboru regionů a dalších organizací, jako je Konference okrajových přímořských regionů, Konference předsedů nejvzdálenějších regionů EU, Shromáždění evropských regionů či R20 – Regions of Climate Action, a rovněž v rámci vztahů se zeměmi, v nichž sídlí komunity původem z Azorských ostrovů, včetně USA, Kanady a Brazílie. V letech 2014 až 2020 byl předsedou Konference okrajových přímořských regionů Evropy.

Od ledna 2013 je předsedou Socialistické strany Azorských ostrovů. Vasco Alves Cordeiro zastává pevný názor, že je naléhavě potřeba věnovat pozornost otázce podpory evropského projektu ze strany občanů, a proto se dlouhodobě zabývá také posilováním sociální, hospodářské a územní soudržnosti v Evropské unii a prosazuje evropské politiky, které jsou skutečně v souladu se zájmy a ambicemi občanů a posilují úlohu regionů coby pilířů vnitřní demokracie Unie a jejího hospodářského a sociálního pokroku.

Vasco Alves Cordeiro je členem Evropského výboru regionů od roku 2013, přičemž v letech 2004 až 2008 byl náhradníkem, a od února 2020 do června 2022 zastával pozici jeho prvního místopředsedy.
