Regional Initiative for Culture and Creativity: Regions join their forces in the field of Cultural Heritage

Last 16th May in Brussels, the Regional Initiative for Culture and Creativity/RICC Network, in collaboration with EU institutions and other networks (NECSTOUR, Europa Nostra and ERRIN), organized the conference The Regional and Local Dimension under the Cultural Heritage. More than 80 representatives of regions and platforms were present at the conference, with experts and speakers from local and regional authorities and representatives both from the European Commission (DG EAC and DG Research & Innovation) and from the European Parliament.

In line with the four main objectives (engagement, sustainability, protection, innovation) identified for the legacy of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, the RICC representatives introduced their good practices for the enhancement of the cultural heritage underlining the potential of CCIs in making cultural heritage more accessible to a wider audience (see Interreg Europe Projects: CREADIS3 , CRE:HUB , CHIMERA, etc)

With a positive feedback and evaluation from the audience, the key messages were: cultural assets are a key driver for the development policy of the regions, they play an important role in promoting Europe's social inclusion, cultural tourism, regional cooperation and development, innovation, competitiveness, sustainability, protection and new skills.

They also contribute to raise awareness on history and shared values and strengthen a sense of belonging to a common European space.

The event was also a contribution to the discussion on the cultural agenda at EU level also in view of the forthcoming programming period.

The event was promoted by the network Regional Initiative for Culture and Creativity (RICC), an informal European network comprised of 25 regional governments, and lead by the Basque Country, Emilia-Romagna and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. RICC aim is to work with regional governments and territorial stakeholders on three objectives: to advocate cultural and creative policies, to participate in relevant EU funding programmes, and to work under the Smart Specialisation RIS3 guidance.
