Statement of President Markkula on the appointment of the new Digital Commissioner

The European Parliament approved today the appointment of Bulgarian Mariya Gabriel as the Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society. Markku Markkula, President of the European Committee of the Regions, affirmed that the new Commissioner will have the full backing of Europe's regions and cities in her mission to build Digital Europe.

We welcome the appointment of Mariya Gabriel as Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society and look forward to working with her. The new Commissioner can count on our active support, know-how and bottom-up actions when moving towards a fully functioning Digital Single Market. Cities and regions are crucial partners in implementing the digital economy in Europe. The recent collaborative activities such as e-government, broadband deployment, open data and e-skills are speeding up the necessary European transformation towards sustainable growth. We will follow her work very closely, paying special attention to improving connectivity and closing the digital divide. In this regard, we are ready to join forces to launch the Participatory Broadband Platform together, based on the proposals in the European Commission's Gigabit Society initiative.
